They are driven forward by the hope of safety, the hope of seeing their family again, the hope of a future. Half of Syria's residents, 12 million in total, have had to leave their homes. Most of them are still trapped within Syria, others have fled to the neighbouring countries of Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. More than half of them are children. Despite recent efforts to end the war, violence is expected to continue in the coming years, producing a colossal tragedy. On the surface, their situation seems without hope.
But is it?

We took the participants in this 5 day campaign to mark the 5 years of war with 5 personal stories of Syrians and their experiences of hope. We invited them to see what hope means for these refugees.

Strategy

Telling a message does not always have to be done by presenting people with a concrete answer. This campaign includes a question: Is there still hope or is there just despair for the Syrian refugees?  Through the stories readers could draw their own conclusions which also stimulated their creativity for solutions.

Concept

The campaign was conducted online, through an online page on the organization's website. In the banner on the main page of the campaign, the word 'WAN' flickered next to the word HOOP, making 'hope' visible in one version of the banner and 'despair' in the other version of the banner.

Content

In the 5 years that the war in Syria had proliferated, the Syrian refugees found themselves either displaced in their own homeland, to nearby countries to all the way to the Netherlands. We wrote the stories of 5 refugees in 5 places, where they ended up stranded in their flight and shared them over 5 days, starting at the date this war officially started.
